Sausage Tomato Cheese Pizza
A classic homemade pizza topped with rich tomato sauce, melted mozzarella, juicy tomato slices, and savory sausage. This recipe makes one large pizza with a crisp golden crust, balanced flavor, and simple step-by-step preparation.
Ingredients:
For the dough:
- 320 g all-purpose flour
- 7 g instant dry yeast
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 200 ml warm water
- 2 tbsp olive oil
For the sauce:
- 150 g crushed tomatoes or tomato passata
- 1 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 clove garlic, finely minced
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1/2 tsp dried oregano
- 1/4 tsp dried basil
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
For the topping:
- 180 g mozzarella cheese, grated or sliced
- 150 g sausage, removed from casing or sliced
- 1 medium tomato, thinly sliced
- 30-40 g extra cheese if desired
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- Optional: a few basil leaves for serving
Cooking method:
1. Prepare the dough:
In a bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Leave for 5-10 minutes until slightly foamy.
Add the flour, salt, and olive oil. Mix until a dough forms.
Knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
2. Make the sauce:
In a small bowl, mix crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, garlic, olive oil, oregano, basil, salt, and black pepper until well combined.
Set aside for 10 minutes so the flavor develops.
3. Prepare the sausage:
If using raw sausage meat, cook it in a skillet over medium heat for 5-6 minutes, breaking it into small pieces, until browned and fully cooked.
If using pre-cooked sausage, slice it into small pieces.
Drain excess fat if needed.
4. Shape the pizza:
Preheat the oven to 240°C. If using a pizza stone or baking steel, place it in the oven while preheating.
Punch down the dough and roll or stretch it into a 30-32 cm round pizza base.
Transfer the dough to a pizza tray, baking sheet, or floured pizza peel.
5. Assemble:
Spread the tomato sauce evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edge.
Add most of the mozzarella cheese.
Distribute the sausage evenly over the pizza.
Arrange the tomato slices on top.
Add the remaining cheese and sprinkle with dried oregano.
Lightly drizzle with olive oil.
6. Bake:
Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted and lightly browned.
Cooking time may vary depending on the oven and thickness of the crust.
7. Serve:
Remove from the oven and let it rest for 2 minutes.
Add fresh basil if desired.
Slice and serve hot.
Notes:
- This recipe makes 1 large pizza, about 8 slices.
- For extra flavor, you can add a pinch of chili flakes or a small amount of grated parmesan.
- If you want a thinner crust, roll the dough more thinly and reduce baking time slightly.
